They see insurance as a kind of lottery rather than a kind of safety net. It is a statistical truth, right in their databases, just as valid as charging higher rates to people with more speeding tickets. (So please, save the angry responses.) Unfortunately, my mother has sued plenty of people. I never agreed with her decision. In many cases, she has won a settlement. Her credit stinks. So I have first hand knowledge of why insurers made this choice, and in my opinion they are right to do so.
